CONTRACT LOGISTICS: FROM EMERGENCY THE BASIS FOR A NEW FUTURE

The speech of Logistica Uno at the event highlighted the importance of intermodal transport during the coronavirus pandemic

On November 10 took place the annual conference of the Contract Logistics Observatory “Gino Marchet” of the Politecnico di Milano entitled “Contract Logistics: from emergency the basis for a new future“.The event highlighted the fundamental role played by logistics during the lockdown period, underlining how the health emergency is accelerating innovation in the sector.

One of the issues that emerged was the difficulty in balancing flows in different sectors and channels in the acute phase of the health emergency. In a context therefore characterized by the difficulty in overcoming the blockages of traditional routes, intermodal transport has drawn considerable advantages. This is because, thanks to intermodality, the difficulties encountered by road vehicles in crossing borders have been overcome. In addition, the staff was able to operate safely reducing physical contact to a minimum. Moreover, even if intermodality does not have the flexibility of all-road, it has the advantage of transporting large quantities of goods. This allows to reduce costs and environmental impact due to CO2.

The crisis has made it possible to experiment and implement railway transport even over short distances. The thought that intermodal transport by rail could only be used for long distances was thus undermined. This mode is also winning in areas where the criticality of the road, in terms of traffic congestion, appears high.

“The development of effective intermodality required organization, clarity and the acquisition of specific skills. We at Logistica Uno have been able to face the difficulties thanks to the fact that in recent years we have invested important resources for the development of projects related to rail transport. 2020 has shown more than ever that intermodality, an eco-sustainable and efficient solution, represents the future of freight transport” concluded Dr. Gianluca Cornelli, Supply Chain Manager of Logistica Uno, during his speech at the conference.
